The different between renovating an old house and making a new house is it’s demolition cost. Making a new house expend zero account for demolition cost. Then, what if a client made a new house and he had to expend the demolition cost? Well, dear architects, this was what happened to your new client from the illustration i wrote earlier.

Because of it’s failures in many things (of course, made by the former contractor), Your poor client had to repair his unfinished (suppose to be) new house and for that reason, he should expend the demolition cost we just talked about. Base on the failures made before, it was a great deal- the demolition cost. Preferably, Your own contractor should demolish the stairs, all the damp and dissimilar walls, all concrete cracks, second floor’s fail slab, etc, and after that, rebuild those elements. Wow, can you imagine that? Those all former stairs, walls, concretes, etc were made to be destroyed. Funny, isn’t it?

Well, actually, it’s not funny at all. Especially for the client. His wife falls her tears after heard your explanation about their house. The husband and wife fight each other and the next rumor you heard about them, they must sell their vehicle if they want to cover the unexpected costs.

Out from the illustration, in this situation, the first thing you have to do is give an explanation to your client about the condition of his unfinished house, while you and your contractor are offering the new cost of house’s renovation-resume. With that, you should ask your client about how far this renovation will done, Is it a hundred percent renovation or less.

And this your ‘saviour of soul’ task : give back their hope that their new dream house is really going to be finished with their ‘already spend a lot’ money.

Well, could you do it? And my architect friends... do not think that the problems end here..

New Boss

To Day... for the first time in more than three weeks, my boss show up at the office, only to pick up his souvenir given by me and take cares some important things.. such as introduce our new boss.

I’m saying the truth. Only with a few words, he declares the replacement officially and voila.. our office has a new boss, for seriously!

Well..... wandering, i still can’t imagine what it will become for, the office.

(sigh) Whatever, let’s just end this talk.

A few days earlier, fryday night it is, we class of Architecture department of UI made a reunion gathering. It was made for celebrating the Idul Fitri that past just a moment a go. It was, too, provoked by a puzzle which spread out into the class’ mailing list at yahoogroups.com.

Caused by one misunderstanding between two and more members, someone posted a very emotional and sencitive mail into the group. In his mail, the member thrashed out his unpleasant feeling to other’s thought about his friendship exclusivity. He was irritated with the thought (purpose or unpurpose, not recall the missunderstood variable) said he is one of some members in our class who seem very picky when choosing friends to hangout. This mail, of course, stired various reactions from everybody. Though they were not replying the mail, i know that this mail has made most members to be upset. Every members felt guilty for their own exclusivity.

Well, i write this not to judge who were fault and who were not. Personally, i don’t think that exclusivity is a crime. It happens naturally when you, in the end, choose a few individuals from all of your friend to be your closest ones. They all will be selected naturally as you know each other. Besides, you don’t think that you will go to watch cinema with all people you know, don’t you? I, myself, too is very exclusive. Things i like were not common at all. How much is the percentage of people who love japan music, japan manga, japan anime, japan culture and so on? Not everyone i talk to will understand if i was talking about L’Arc~en~Ciel (We should stop it right there, it will be an endless talk if we’re nearing L’Arc~en~Ciel topic area). Ok, the point is.. everyone is free to be exclusive (while they are already being an exclusive, considered or not).

But... i agree that the exclusivities have distanced the bound between the classes.

Back to the group’s puzzle, one mail posted then and break the unpleasant aura in the groups with an idea of future class’ gathering as soon as possible. So, it arranged and setted on last Friday, took a place in a restaurant in PI Plaza.

Most of class members came up and they were doing their best. The gathering, it is, setted suddenly, late and far from our work offices (most of it) but they showed up. The invitation (which is spreaded only through phone messages) gave the wrong clue to reach the restaurant. The Restaurant was unfamiliar and the menus were hardly to said.

But again, minna san wa mou gambarimashita, ne?

All the time, everyone kep trying to out from their own exclusivites. Everyone were trying to know each other more. Everyone were giving attention to the others as much as they could do. They were trying to renewed the bound.

The were doing their best.

(Big smile with pleasant feeling). Well.. sometimes.. missunderstanding can be good too.

New Experience : Making A Movie

This one is kinda old stuff, actually. Two month a go, in august 2005, Me and my friends have finished our first and one movie ever. A short one, 25 minutes. We made that movie to congrated 22 friends of us who graduated their architecture study in University of Indonesia.

It’s our tradition to make a short video to congrates the fresh graduates. Usually, each of our department class will make a speech wich was taked by camera. The most simple one is standing in front of the camera and said, ‘Congrats to all the fresh graduates. May success come to you’ but every seasons the videos are getting more creative.

Most of them contain of parody which was expressed in various ways.
We, the class of 2000, the already graduated architects (most of us are girls and most of the future graduates are boys) agreed to make one and it will be a not too simple video. We planned to make a short movie!

Therefore.. the girls met. After a long term discussion, we agreed to named our future movie as ‘Our Arisan’ (I was the one who picked this title and now I kinda confuse why I use the ‘arisan ‘ indonesian word and not english’s ‘gathering’, but anyway, my decision were right).

The movie were going to illustrated a reality, the reality of our lives after graduate from architecture department, especially, our monthly routine gathering with a little note about our daily lives (working, shopping, chatting, etc). The gathering that was showed up in this movie was a special one because it themed as ‘Wisudawan Wanna Be’ (again, I confuse about the languages mixing but whatever, it already done). In this gathering, the girls (as former graduates) would become one of the future graduates. Cool, huh?

Outside the story, we made a little committee to produce this movie, a serious one. We had our own producer, executive producer, director (that was me), co director, script writer, script editor (that was also me), film editor, music and sound editor, property master, set decorator, costume supervisor and make up artist, camera operators, and of course, the artists. At that time, we just thinked that we were going to do this like we made our cabaret.

The next thing we did was let the script writer do their script. It taked weeks before, finally, I could edit the script… and, as I thoughted, the editing thing were going to be hard. The script itself was kinda outed of line but it’s ok.. that what a script editor is for. I, myself, not only edited the script but also made the story boards.

When Me and the script writer did our job, the other were doing their tasks. They were preparing for the equipments (camera- a non-profesional one-, costumes, set, lights, etc), locations, money, etc.

In the time the script was done, we started to take the scene. It spend weeks because we only taked them at weekend. We use an architecture consultant office, a boutique, one of dixie restaurant, and some houses as locations (if I remember this, it really make me feel like I was making a real movie- laugh). Well, on those weeks, we got some troubles which were enough to hold us. Such as, unmatch schedule, minimum equipment, minimum knowledge, etc.

The editing was the most hard one. I and our producer accompanied the film editor did this part. By using only one simple program (which it difficult for us to catch), we spend a lot of nights that made us stressed. After experienced this editing stuff, I personally gave the most respect to film editors that ever exist in this world for their great jobs. Come on, we only made a 25 minutes movie and the editing made us crazy but they made two hours movies!! Wow, they’re tough!! I admire them, I really do!

The most marvelous thing was the fact that these 20 girls who joined in this movie production team were girls with zero experience and knowledge of making a ‘real and serious’ movie! We used a common-home-video camera, bad lighting, artists who were not practice at all, no microphone, and so on. We were having problem with video transfering. We even started the movie editor program with ‘what is the first step?’ words. But, everyone were so committ and they did their best to make this movie. The image quallity was kinda bad but the rest were the best we can do (story, dialogs, scenes, flows, editing, sound, music). These girls were perfectionist ones! We don’t want to make a so so movie.

This one really is an experience.

Anyway, my most favorite scenes in this movie are the scene which show L’Arc-en-Ciel’s live concert in Japan, graduation scene which contain ‘Honey’, one of L’Arc-en-Ciel’s works and the credit title (which show my name as director- big grin). Well, everyone who know me and watch this movie will agree about my very self ego but I don’t mind coz’ I am an egoist one- LOL.

We are still discussing the same topic here: you architects have possibilities to be more than architects but saviours of soul.
Well... shall we continue the illustration then?
The day after, you and your new client went to see the on held house project. Accompanied by your own contractor partner, you made a slight observation and my dear architects, you realize that it was not only about your new client and and his cheat contractor.
That time, You were standing inside one of most disaster house project that you ever know. One thought that had crossed your mind was, 'is this contractor really can build?'
The reasons of that idea are:
first, the bathrooms had same floor level as general space outside it while theorically and practically, bathroom floor level has to be lower.
second, both of main and second concrete stairs were failures. Both of stairs had each different thickness, lenght, and height steps (you were wondering if they made the stairs while they were sleeping)
third, all of it's wall were not comparable and damp
fourth, there were a lot of concrete cracks in it's structures
fifth, the existing condition of the house was very not comparable with it's construction drawing. It has 1 point 5 metres terrace lenght when it suppose to be 2 metres, and so on
and so on...
there were a lot of problems in it that you hope you never cross this project, ever

so, what would you do then?

dear all architects in the world, do you realize that you can save people lives with your knowledge?
once upon a time, when you were in the middle of your professional routinity.. a future client came to you and said that he need a help. He and his wife were making their future dreamed house. The construction already held for more than 5 month and the progress was slow. They already spent over than 600 million rupiahs but only 30 percents done.
You talked with this still future client, and found that the contractor was not working properly. The spent money was out with unwell described purposes. This future client gave out the money but received no reports for the details. At this state, You were sure that this contractor is not a good one. They cheated the client, you persumed so.
You gave your formal advice to the future client, told him that, if he could not trust the contractor anymore, he should fired them and find a new one. With no objection, the future client agreed with you and accept the advice, so did your 'project take over' offer. And now he, officialy, is your client.
At this state... you were not realize yet that you are going to be more than a normal architect but a saviour of soul

Hari ini tanggal merah dan g ngga kemana-mana lantaran ngga punya uang [makanya.. gaji jangan diabisin buat jajan cd original doank!]. Hiks... hayo bersabar.... bulan juni tinggal satu minggu lagi.... tanggal satu gajian.... [trus maksudnya apa? Mau jajan cd lagi, kan?]

Hm.. kalo dipikir2, pengeluaran bulan depan akan lebih parah lagi... arisan bulanan ars, rapat pembuatan film psb, arisan bulanan format, nemenin dita belanja baju kerja, album baru larc, bedak tabur n blush on oriflame, komiks, dll... okh... getting makin boros aja every month... huks.. bagaimana cara menghemat ya?

Arisan2 ngga bisa dikurangi... nemenin dita belanja [asal ngga ikutan] bisa cuma keluar ongkos sama uang makan.. oh iya album baru larc masuk indonesia baru bulan juli [imported] ato agustus.... bedak n blush on ngga bisa ditunda lagi, soalnya dah ditunda sebulan belinya... komiks..mulai berpikir untuk menghentikan beberapa komik...

Sekarang ini, g adalah banci laruku! G mulai berburu album-album lama [original] mereka, konser2 mereka, ngunjungin official web mereka hampir tiap hari [berharap ada kabar kalo mereka akan konser di sini], counting down perilisan album terbaru mereka, dll [tapi jangan salah, g ngga ngumpulin gambar larc. Pernah tapi kemudian g merasa lucu]

G ngga bosen. I’ve already passed that ‘bosen’ period. G bisa mendengarkan lagu larc berulang-ulang dan ngga hoek karena g sudah sampai tahap ‘memereteli’ elemen lagu-lagu itu satu-satu waktu mendengarkan [got the ‘mereteli’ thing? Maksudnya, g fokus dengerin gitarnya doang, bassnya, dll, makanya g ngga bosen-bosen]. Itu belum apa-apa. Kalo nonton konsernya, g akan membandingkan konser version sama album versionnya [kebanyakan sih mereka suka improve].

Okh.... ada yang tau bagaimana cara melepaskan diri? Dulu g pernah banci juve [by the way, Juve scudetto 2005! Kya!!!] dan itu lewat begitu g sibuk kuliah dan ngga sering mengikuti berita juve lagi. Kalo begitu... kapan larc akan lewat?
